Off-grid campervan road trip:
Amsterdam to Scandinavia

An off-grid campervan and the Nordic right to roam are made for each other. Here's how to drive from Amsterdam to the fjords — the route, the wild-camping rules, the ferries, and what your van needs to stay self-sufficient the whole way.

Why it works Off-grid is built for the north

Most rental campervans are tethered to campsites — they need a mains hook-up for power and a service point for water. That's fine for a weekend, but it falls apart the moment you reach Scandinavia, where the best places to sleep are nowhere near a campsite.

A fully off-grid van changes the trip completely. Solar panels and a leisure battery cover your power, an onboard tank and filter handle water, and you cook on gas. You're not looking for the next campsite — you're looking for the next view.

"In Norway, Sweden and Finland the law is on your side: the right to roam lets you camp freely in nature. Off-grid autonomy is what turns that right into a real night's sleep."

The route Amsterdam to the fjords, stage by stage

You can pick the van up in Amstelveen, about 20 minutes from Schiphol, and be at the German–Danish border the same day. Here's a relaxed two-week framing — stretch or shorten it to taste.

1 · Amsterdam → Hamburg~460 km

An easy first leg up through the Netherlands and northern Germany. Overnight near Hamburg or push on to the Baltic coast for your first quiet night by the water.

2 · Hamburg → Denmark~300 km

Cross into Jutland and follow the Danish coast. Denmark has designated nature campsites (shelter spots) and is the gentle warm-up before the wilder north.

3 · Denmark → SwedenØresund Bridge or ferry

Drive the Øresund Bridge into Malmö, or take a short ferry. From here allemansrätt applies — lakes, forests and a place to park almost everywhere you look.

4 · Sweden → Norway~500 km to Oslo

Head north-west toward Oslo and the fjord country. This is where an off-grid van earns its keep: dramatic pull-offs with nothing around for miles.

5 · The fjords (and beyond)As far as you dare

From Oslo, chase the fjords west and north. With time on your side, the Lofoten Islands and the midnight sun are the ultimate reward for a long, self-sufficient haul.

Good to know Ferries, fuel & the practical stuff

None of this requires a special licence: a standard category B licence is enough, and EU and non-EU international licences are both accepted. The minimum age is 25.
